Club History
Our club traces its roots back to 1969. Doug Whistance, from England, formed a small club of mostly distance runners. They called themselves The South Waterloo Harriers. Approximately six members met to train in Victoria Park. In their second year a member by the name of Bob Tease, specializing in 3 to 5K races won the national juvenile cross country championship and brought the club some fame and a bit of a boost. |
In the 1970's city officials traveled with the club to the Canamera games, saw the track and field facilities in Saginaw, Michigan and vowed that Cambridge should get a similar amenity. Shortly thereafter, Southwood track was built. The club adopted this as their base and in 1972-73 became known as the Cambridge Track and Field Club. By this time there were as many as ten coaches. Membership climbed to some where around 70 to 100, ranging in age from 13 to the open class. In 1978 Doug left to take up a business opportunity in Muskoka. The coaches, mostly teachers, also moved on to other things.
In 1979 George Aitkin also left and joined the Waterloo County Amateur Athletic Association. Back in Cambridge a small group of parents kept the Cambridge Track and Field going. In 1981 Hans Engelhardt, Brian Gough and George Aitkin decided to reform the club as the Cambridge Harriers. They really wanted to run for a Cambridge club. Through the 80's this core group, joined by Clayton Klaver and later Art Wilson, kept the Harriers going. George worked on Gary and Brenda Cassel and they too joined.
The YMCA also used to have an active running club that organized a race called the International Festival 10K. This race was taken over by the Harriers and was moved from the old Y location to a route starting and finishing on the Southwood School track. When popularity for 10 K races waned, the race was reduced to 5K and eventually moved to Churchill Park, where Babcocks had formerly run a 5 K race. In 1989 this became the "Legends" race.
