We had a good contingent of Harriers competing in, and helping out at the Conquer The Canuck Trail Races at Shades Mills last weekend. We had a winner in the 8.9 km race with Jacob Zerko zipping around the hilly course in 32:43. Nelson Coelho was 11th in 48:31, Dave Johnson was 13th in 51:04 and Sharon Rutledge was 17th in 59:19.
In the 25 km, Steve Mota was 7th out of 55 runners in 2:18:04. Mitch Free took the win in 1:43:27 A few club results keep trickling in. Jacob Zerko continued his strong showing last weekend, placing second out of 567 runners in the Moon In June 5K in Burlington. It was his first 5K and his time was 16:14. Recently, Rob Brouillette placed 1st in the Sulphur Springs 20K Trail Race in Ancaster, posting a time of 1:16. Heather Chan competed in the Huron Shore Half Marathon up in Southampton, finishing in 2:15 and first in her age category. And here's a report from Steve Mota about his most recent race: Doug Rivera and Steve Mota joined Pedro Fernandes and his Bruce Trail Mix relay team at this year's edition of the Cabot Trail Relay. The Cabot Trail Relay Race is a 300Km race, which starts in Baddeck, NS and does a counterclockwise loop of Cape Breton Island (Cabot trail), returning to Baddeck to finish. There are 17 legs or individual races, each vary in distance between 12 to 20km. There are some very challenging hill climbs on some of these legs! Pedro had been going to this race for 20 years, and just completed all 17 legs this year. Doug and I were "newbies" on the 13 member team. One of our team members had to cancel the trip due to getting Covid, and Doug and I were tasked with doing two legs each, yikes! All went well and the camaraderie, excellent seafood and amazing scenery made it an epic trip, highly recommended. Our team finished 34th out of 63 teams overall Well, another successful result for Jacob Zerko last weekend, this time at the 63rd annual Alviston to Watford (two small Ontario towns) 10 mile road race. Into a headwind the whole way, Jacob stuck with Lucas Salazer-Reid for 6K before losing touch. The two of them missed a directional arrow causing them to run 500 metres extra, but they still placed 1st and 2nd in 1:00:12 for Lucas and 1:00:35 for Jacob.
Prior to that, Jacob won the annual Burlington Runners Good Friday 10K, running the course in 34:19 to win by one minute; as well as winning the Ed Whitlock Half Marathon in Waterloo with a personal best time of 1:17:25, giving him a 10 minute margin of victory over the field of 210 runners. What a season our Harrier is having! Rob Brouillette ran a nice personal best in the Houston Half Marathon this past weekend. He cut his time down to 1 hour, 8 minutes and 53 seconds in finishing 110th overall out of 13,417 runners.
Dale Harrison raced in Bermuda on the weekend, completing the Bermuda Triangle event - the road mile (8:37) the 10K (65:41) and the marathon (5:24). Not a serious race weekend, but lots of fun apparently. there were several rum swizzle stops in the marathon. Gary Cassel junior has competed in two masters indoor track meets so far this winter. He ran a 5:18 1500 metres on January 5th and a 3:17 1000 metres on January 19th. Of course it's not uncommon for a result or two to be missed or incorrect. I was reminded that back in November, Brenda Cassel was 1st in the 70+ category at the Remember Run 5K in Preston, with a 42:24 clocking. It never got reported that Mike Hammond ran the New York City Marathon back in the fall and crossed the finish line in a very good time of 3 hours, 7 minutes and 16 seconds. We had a good showing of Harriers at the Cambridge YMCA Jingle Bell Races on Sunday past.
Olivia Grafinger led the way, finishing first in the 20-29s in 20:52. Gary Cassel junior was first in the 50-59 category in 21:01 and Kamil Kosciukiewicz was 3rd in the 20-29 male category. Victoria Webster ran 22:44 to place 2nd in the 20-29 category, Gumby Mota was 2nd in the 50-59s with a 23:27, and Henley Bullock was 2nd in the under 15 girls category in 26:30. Heather Chan ran a 29:47, Warren Barlow finished in 29:54, and Brenda Cassel won the women's 70+ category in 38:49. There were 90 runners and it was won by Josh Morrison in 16:43. The 2.5 K race had 152 runners and just one Harrier. George Aitkin managed to get beaten by only about 15, 12-and-unders and was 3rd in the 16+ category in 12:57. We had a few Harriers competing in the recent RememberRun in town. Gary Cassel junior was 10th in the 5K race with a time of 20:25, good for 1st in the 50-54 category. Katherine Willis took first in the women's 60-64 category with a time of 25:58, and Mike Hammond crossed the line with a 28 minute even clocking.
Rob Brouillette was 5th in the 11K race, posting a time of 46:13. We had a good group of Harriers compete in the final running of the Run For The Toad on October 5th. Lisa leskien was 6th female and 2nd in the 30-39 category with a 2:06:51 for the 25K. Steve Mota was next in 2:13:25, then Dave Johnson in 2:27:48 and Joyce Barlow in 2:29:38. At the Sticks and Stones 10K Trail Race in Dundas, Nelson Coelho took 3rd place in the 40-49 category, running 55:31 while Sharon Rutledge covered the distance in 1:02:36. Dale Harrison ran his 18th career marathon at the Scotiabank Toronto Marathon on Sunday, finishing the 42.2 km in 4:38:42. Douglas Rivera posted a time of 3:37:22 abd Kamil Kosciukiewicz competed in the half marathon, finishing in 2:00:10. Heather Chan ran 2:28:20 at the Living Water Resort Half Marathon in Collingwood on October 5th. The photos are of: Steve, Joyce, Dave, Lisa, Jenn, Nelson, Katherine and Rob. Anita Cressman was the only Harrier at the Harvest Half Marathon last Saturday. She took second place in her age category with a time of 1:49:58. Kenyan Wesley Korir won in 1:05! 240 runners were competing.
At the Tally In The Valley trail races in Ancaster last week, Lisa Leskien was second overall (and first female) in the 6 hour race, covering 57 kilometres. Andrew Jones walk/ran 33 kilometres.
